Shut Down Line 5
We the people of Michigan join Senator Rebekah Warren in calling on Governor Snyder and Attorney General Schuette to revoke a permit that allows Enbridge — a Canadian energy company — to operate a 60-year-old pipeline under the Straits of Mackinac.
This pipeline is a known hazard to our jobs, economy and way of life. The University of Michigan conducted a simulated oil spill that shows the volatility of even a small oil spill in the Great Lakes.
Enbridge’s neglect of safety concerns goes far beyond a lack of transparency. Here are just a few problems with Line 5 that we know of:
It has already spilled more than 1.1 million gallons of oil.
Strong water currents have mangled and moved the pipeline from its original location.
An independent investigation found that the pipeline is falling apart.
Line 5 was originally permitted to pump 300,000 gallons per day, but 60 years later, Enbridge has continued to ignore safety concerns and increased pressure on the pipeline to 540,000 gallons per day.
Line 5 was originally built to last 50 years, but has been allowed to operate for 60 years.
Line 5 is a ticking time bomb, and it’s time to shut this pipeline down.
