Stop for-profit corporations from taking over our schools.
The Detroit Free Press recently ran an exposé showing that Michigan charter schools spend $1 billion a year in taxpayer dollars with little transparency, oversight, or accountability. A majority of these charter schools are run by for-profit companies from out of state, and even though they take public taxpayer money, they refuse to disclose how that money is being spent.
Our taxpayer money should be going to educate our kids, not to line the pockets of CEOs!
Ever since Michigan opened the doors to these for-profit companies taking over our schools, people have been voicing concerns that these schools would be more focused on making money than educating our kids, and that Lansing was handing over your hard-earned tax dollars to these unproven companies with little oversight or accountability in return.
We want that to end!
We are calling on the Michigan Legislature and Governor Snyder to prohibit for-profit corporations from operating any public school in Michigan.
Legislation has already been introduced to accomplish this, but so far has not even received a hearing.
It’s time to act. The Legislature must pass SJR R immediately so that Michigan tax dollars are only used to better our schools and educate our kids, not generate profits for these unaccountable corporations.
